Case Study: Exclusion Fencing for Public Safety

A client with an extended garden that included a large pond near residential properties engaged Agri‑Fencing Taranaki to design a protective barrier around the area inhabited by resident ducks. Public access paths ran close by, creating a real risk, especially for children and roaming dogs. The task was to deliver a durable, discreet exclusion fence that balanced safety with environmental sensitivity.

The Problem

A local property owner in Taranaki approached us with a serious concern: a pond on their property that had public access nearby. With children in the area, the owner’s top priority was preventing accidents and ensuring the pond was completely secured. At the same time, they wanted a solution that would stand the test of time, look tidy, and, if possible, keep dogs out too.

Pond-side fencing presents unique challenges. Uneven ground, soft soils near water, and tricky access can make it difficult to get a fence line both strong and level. On top of that, exclusion fencing requires a finer mesh than traditional stock fences, which can be heavy and harder to tension properly over rises and dips.

Our Solution
After discussing options with the client, we recommended a netting-based exclusion fence at a height that would:

  • Deter children from climbing through or over.

  • Stop dogs and some predators from entering.

  • Provide a long-lasting, low-maintenance barrier around the pond.

To overcome the ground challenges, we installed strong strainers and used equine-grade netting with tight spacings, supported by high tensile wires. In softer areas near the pond edge, we built up a small retaining base to stabilise the posts and prevent sagging.

We also added a secure access gate with child-proof latches, giving the landowner peace of mind without cutting off future maintenance access to the pond.

The Result
The finished fence provided a robust, tidy, and safe exclusion zone around the pond. The owners were relieved to know that children could now play freely on the property without the risk of wandering too close to the water. The netting design also doubled as a barrier against unwanted dogs, protecting both the pond wildlife and the owner’s peace of mind.

This project is a good example of how exclusion fencing isn’t just about animals—it’s about protecting people too. At Agri-Fencing Taranaki, we believe fencing should always be practical, safe, and tailored to each property’s unique needs.
